Cindy Wilson is a thirty year old woman who had seen her mother raped and has suffered at the hands of her father. Her father is now deceased and Cindy and her mother are picking themselves up from years of abuse.

Her mother encourages her daughter to take up a hobby and so she buys Cindy a sport car and membership to a car club. Cindy soon finds herself amongst an array of colourful characters, including a group set on breaking the club apart.

A club trip is planned and Cindy is attending. She meets Aidan Barkley. He is an ex-cop whose wife died five years ago in a drug bust that went wrong. He is consumed with guilt. Originally from Sydney he has returned to look after his brother Dylan, who is recuperating from an operation. Aidan takes Dylan’s place in the club run. He wants to move on with his life but to date hasn’t. Cindy and Aidan hit it off and form a friendship. Cindy hasn’t had a relationship with anyone, and although strong of spirit, she is fearful of men. Aidan realises, if he wants to help Cindy he must take things slowly with her.
When the leader of the breakaway group assault's his wife, his car has acid poured over it and he dies mysteriously. The police become involved and Aidan starts his own investigation, collecting evidence with Cindy. The investigating police aren’t happy and the Sergeant in charge runs a check on Aidan’s background. He doesn’t like what he discovers. When Aidan suddenly disappears, Cindy sets out to find the man she’s fallen in love with before it’s too late.

A personal dream, a passionate love, and a stack of secrets leads to disaster.

Annabel Martin dreams of winning a Melbourne Cup—the highest honour for any jockey in Australia. When a top trainer offers her a ride on the stallion, Reckless Night, Annabel hesitates only because her friend, James McKenzie is the usual jockey. But not only is James’s leg broken, but the trainer offers her a sweetener: if she wins the race, she can ride the horse through the Spring Campaign and on to the Melbourne Cup. Chasing her dreams earns Annabel an enemy in Damon Black—the man second to James, and the jockey who should have been in line to ride Reckless Night.

As Annabel begins her new job, a shady trainer drags Annabel’s father into the middle of a horse swapping scam. Because of her connection to both horses, Annabel is implicated—just as Damon Black begins to become dangerous, and just as she and James become more than friends. A fire at the stables sends James to the hospital, where Annabel’s possible involvement in the scheme is laid out in front of him. Not only was his dream of the Melbourne Cup snatched from him, but the woman he loves may not be who she says she is.

As Annabel’s world implodes, she faces her father’s shady connections, a possible riding ban, and losing the man she loves. But Annabel’s a woman who has survived as a top jockey in a man’s world, and she has no intention of letting her dreams be lost—no matter how high the odds are against her.
