The recent Romance Writers of Australia Conference started off in fine style with the Friday workshop run this year by Alexandra Sokoloff. Her topic “Screenwriting Tricks for Authors and Screenwriters” was well attended and a must for writers across all genres.
Fiona Lowe engaged us with her workshop, “Putting sizzle into every scene”. She was inventive and funny and I enjoyed her presentation immensely. Pitches dragged many of us out of workshops. Nerve wracking as it was, it was a good experience and part of the writers journey. John Barletta’s workshop “The Joys and Challenges of Romantic Attraction” gave us an interesting insight into relationship problems. Between workshops we indulged in some wonderful morning teas, lunches and afternoon teas. The food was superb and those with special dietary needs were not over looked. The other highlight for me was the Sunday morning breakfast with Eloisa James. Eloisa shared hints on how to run the business side of being a writer. She was articulate and enjoyable to listen too and I certainly found the hour she shared with us thought provoking. The Thursday and Friday night cocktail parties went off with a bang and the “champagne” flowed. The Saturday night dinner was superb and awards exciting. I’m sure everyone went away hoping that one day they would be going up to the stage for an award. Well done to all the committee and volunteers that work tirelessly to ensure the conference runs without a hitch. The conference closed with a presentation from Perth on the 2013 conference. I for one was sold immediately. Roll on next year.
